Are searchng for for the Brussels ring road or the trail left behind by the suckerfish? Don’t bother — the image was taken in 1969, before this section of the Brussels Ring had even been built. Back then, Neerpede was mainly known for its “Boerkozen”.
Today, it feels as though a nature reserve, social housing estates, farmlands, giant retail stores, sports complexes, a cemetery and a university hospital were thrown together in a blender and scattered across the landscape in pieces.
Yet it is precisely this constantly shifting environment that makes it one of the most characteristic and fascinating places I encountered while creating Le RIng. I’ll take you along through the area, bring hidden stories into the spotlight, and tell the story of this place’s rise, decline and rebirth. And of course, I’ll also explain what exactly is going on with those suckerfish… and the Boerkozen.
